By: Audiologist, Angie Lederman, MS, CCC-A

Did you know that you can often prevent noise-induced hearing loss?

Good news! Hearing loss is not always inevitable. Noise-induced hearing loss occurs due to exposure to loud sounds. Think about concerts, lawn mowers, loud workplaces – these can all contribute to permanent hearing loss. We are exposed to loud noises throughout our lives. It is no wonder that preventable hearing loss is common. Even children are now showing signs of preventable hearing loss. It is how we handle these loud situations that make the difference.

What You Can Do

  • Turn Down the Volume – Whenever you can turn down the volume, do so. Whether you are watching television, listening tot he radio, or listening to a podcast with headphones on, lower the volume to a safe level.
  • Limit Time Spent in Loud Situations – Do you frequently go to loud restaurants or clubs? Consider a different social meeting place. Noise-induced hearing loss occurs accumulatively. This means repeated exposure to loud noise will continue to impact your hearing. Walk away from the noise whenever you can.
  • Limit the Amount of Time You Wear Earbuds – Follow the 60/60 rule. Limit the volume to 60% of the maximum and limit the amount of time you listen to 60 minutes.
  • Wear Hearing Protection – If you know you are going to be exposed to loud noises, be prepared with hearing protection. Hearing protection comes in many forms from custom in-ear plugs to over-the-ear muffs.Find which style is the most comfortable for you so you are more likely to utilize them.
  • Use Apps to Track Noise Exposure – There are several apps available on smartphones that you can use to monitor noise levels in real time. These apps are not always completely accurate, however, they are still a valuable way to make you more aware of the noises you are exposed to.
